Film Music Competition

One film – three musical experiences

Once a year the Zurich Film Festival and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG collaborate with the Forum Filmmusik to present the International Film Music Competition.

Composers of any age, any nationality and any domicile who have not set more than 3 feature films (longer than 60 minutes) to music are eligible to participate. The competition requires entrants to compose a brand new score for a short film of about 5 minutes. This year’s International Film Music Competition requires participants to score the award-winning short film ETIQUETA NEGRA by David Vergés.

More than 180 composers from 37 countries entered the 9th International Film Music Competition. A renowned jury including Mychael Danna, Diego Baldenweg, Pirmin Marti and Frank Strobel chose three compositions to enter the final:

  • Julien Bellanger (France)
  • John Heins (USA)
  • Andrey Mordovsky (Russia)

These winning compositions will be premiered at the Tonhalle Zürich during the Zurich Film Festival on September 30, 2021 by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under the musical direction of Frank Strobel and in the presence of the nominees. The jury will announce the winning composition on the same evening and present the Golden Eye for “Best International Film Music” endowed with a CHF 10’000 cash prize.
